WHAT YOU WILL SEE
PORTICO D’OTTAVIA
A spectacular portico was built by Augustus in the 27 century BCE to celebrate his sister Octavia and we still have little remains. The Porticus, originally built in the 147 BCE by Metellus was constructed in order to surround the Temple of Juno Regina and the Temple of Jupiter Stator. In the Medieval period the Porticus was transformed into the city’s fish market and in the VIII c. they also built there the Church of Sant’Angelo in Pescheria.
TEATRO MARCELLO
The theatre of Marcellus was built in the 1st c. BCE during the reign of Augustus but it was dedicated to Marcellus, Augustus’s nephew. The theatre had a capacity of 20.000 spectators . The theatre was a popular place to watch plays, concerts and poetry recitals.
The building was taken by a rich Roman family (Savelly) in 1368 in order to turn the top tiers in apartments.
SYNAGOGUE
The Great Synagogue of Rome is a symbol of the new-found freedom and the building was inaugurated at the beginning of the XX c. The synagogue was designed Neo-Assyrian with a Neo Byzantine plan and a Neoclassical exterior.
VIA DELLE REGINELLE
It’s a typical narrow alleyway where was set the sixth gate of the Jewish ghetto in the 1825. You can still find beautiful art galleries and artisan workshops.
FONTANA DELLE TARTARUGHE
The Fontana delle Tartarughe it was built at the end of the XVI c. by the architect Giacomo Della Porta and the sculptor Taddeo Landini. There are four bronze ephebes hold a circular basin with a hand and with another they help bronze turtles to climb the fountain.
