COLOSSEUM

The Colosseum is the biggest Roman amphitheatre all over the world. Built by the emperor Vespasian in 72 then was completed in AD 80 by his successor Titus (r. 79–81). The Colosseum was a symbol of a political propaganda, since the tickets were for free.

It was an amphiteather for games and the games started in the morning with the venationes: games against the animals then the public executions and in the afternoon the gladiators games. We will discover the incredible story of the building, the daily life in ancient Rome, the stories of the gladiators and the bloody battles.

DOMUS AUREA

The Domus Aurea is a vast palace built by the Emperor Nero after the great fire in 64 AD. He had destroyed a large part of the city and the aristocratic villas on the Palatine Hill. The palace was built with the finest marble and decorated with wall paintings, soaring domes and ornamental fountains. After Nero’s death the builiding was abandoned and much of its precious material was taken, in order to recycle.

THE ARCH OF CONSTANTINE

is a triumphal arch in Rome dedicated to the emperor Constantine the Great. It was built to celebrate Constantine’s victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge in AD 312.  It is the largest surviving Roman triumphal arch, it’s 21 meter high and 25.6 wide. Many parts of the arch (especially statues) were recycled from other monuments making the arch ecletic and stylistically varied.
